The Birmingham shotstopper pulled out of the squad because of injury, with Carlisle's Kieren Westwood called up in his place.

The Republic manager Giovanni Trapattoni has promised every member of his squad the chance to play against Serbia or Colombia.

Trapattoni initially planned to stick with jusy two keepers - Murphy and West Brom's Dean Kiely - but Westwood's impressive display against Leeds in the League One play-offs earned him a call.

"I said we would stay as we are, but Alan (Kelly), the goalkeeping coach, said he would maybe ask another because when we had the injury, it was impossible to stay with only two goalkeepers," said Trapattoni.

"Our scout told us Westwood played very well against Leeds. He was born in England, but his father is from Ireland, so I said, 'Okay, call him up'."

The Republic squad are in Portugal for a training camp, and will play Portimonese on Sunday and Lagos on Monday in practice games before returning to Dublin.
