The caretaker boss Stuart Watkiss will continue to pick the side for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern section second round game at Glanford Park, with Newell taking charge of the team the following day.
Newell has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal to take charge at Blundell Park, with the Mariners having sacked Alan Buckley following a dismal start to the new season in which they are still without a win.
Newell was in charge of Luton from the summer of 2003 until March of 2007, before being sacked for questioning the actions of the club's board of directors.
