The Northern Ireland international will serve a one-match ban after being shown his fifth yellow card of the season in Saturday's win over Sheffield United. The ban applies to the next game played, in a change to previous Football League rules which previously saw the suspension only applied after a seven game wait.

Nigel Adkins, the Scunthorpe manager, is likely to pair Grant McCann with Josh Wright in the centre of midfield. Both suffered knocks on Saturday but have been passed fit for Tuesday.

The visitors are likely to be without defenders Steven Taylor (hamstring and Fabricio Coloccini (groin).

Chris Hughton, who confirmed on Monday he is in talks to become Newcastle's boss on a permanent basis having been in charge in a caretaker basis since the end of last season, is also without Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton. Both players are long-term absentees with foot injuries.
