Niall Canavan, Sam Winnall, Jimmy Spencer and David Syers were on target for the Iron, who eased past the hosts who were reduced to nine men in the second half.

“I think you’ve got to give the whole group a lot of credit,” Wilcox told the press.

“It’s not just the lads who played either, you’ve got to look at the group as a whole. You’ve got to look at the Chris Iwelumo’s and the Cliff Byrne’s and you’ve got to look at everybody.

“They’re all in there and that’s the way I’m trying to do it. It’s all about the group, not just about the team and they’ve played a part as well tonight.

“The lads tonight were outstanding.”

Rochdale had Oliver Lancashire and Jack O’Connell sent off in the second half and Wilcox suggested the home side could have no complaints.

“Certainly from my viewpoint – the second yellow he was grappling him. It was more of a rugby tackle than a football tackle really. The penalty for me is inside the box and it’s a goalscoring opportunity.”

Wilcox added: “I think he got them both right.”
