South-east England has been the worst affected. The Met office issuing an extreme weather warning and predicting more snow for Tuesday.

450 schools in Essex, the county Southend is in, were closed on Monday with temperatures not expected to rise above zero. Despite this, the Shrimpers had no pitch inspection planned as of 1pm on Monday.

An indication of how severe the weather is came in the postponement of Arsenal's FA Cup tie with Cardiff City on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium because of concerns for supporter safety.

One unexpected impact on football is a potential extension of the transfer deadline, with the Premier League holding talks with the Football Association and Fifa to move it beyond the 5pm cut-off as travel throughout the country was hindered.

Mike Foster, the Premier League's general secretary said move was requested as players were struggling to attend medicals.

"It's already having an effect in terms of players getting from one end of the country to another," he said.

"We're currently trying to gauge the level of activity of transactions that are in the pipeline.

"It would nice if we could say simply let's extend the deadline by 24-48 hours, but it's not a decision that we can take alone."
