Sunderland defender looking to crack first team

Byrne completed a loan switch from the Black Cats earlier this week and is set to make his league debut this afternoon when Swansea City visit Glanford Park.

He will play at centre-back, with Nathan Stanton returning to his favoured right-back position after being switched back to the centre of defence at Nortwhich last week.

Byrne has been with Sunderland for five years, but has yet to make the jump from reserve team football to first team football for them - although he is highly rated at the Stadium Of Light.

After captaining Ireland sides right upto U21 level United know that they've got a potential star joining them.

"Hopefully i'm down to play, and if i do i'm definately looking forward to it," the Irish youngster stated.

"I'm here to help scunthorpe out and in return they're helping me out by giving me experience, i'm coming down here looking to impress.

"First impressions are good, I've met the manager and coaching staff, and the training was a good laugh."

Byrne has yet to taste first team club football at any level, but knows what to expect from the third division this afternoon.

"It's a lot quicker and a lot more physical because there's the points to play for," he added.

Iron manager Brian Laws says he is delighted to bring him into the club.

Sunderland have granted United permission to play Byrne in next month's FA Cup clash against Carlisle United.
