A statement on the Torquay website stated: "The decision is based purely on footballing grounds, after falling from play-off contenders last season to just escaping relegation this time around, and early exits in all three cup competitions."

Interim manager Knill confirmed Torquay's League Two status with a 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers. However it is unclear yet whether he will be offered the job full time.

’My teams have always been strong at this part of the season and thankfully Torquay have been strong. I’ve enjoyed every minute of being here and a big thank-you to the players, the directors and the supporters", Knill said.

‘’I look forward to seeing Torquay in League 2 next season. My remit was simply to keep us in the league. I’ve done it before and was confident I could do it again.

‘’To be honest, I didn’t really know the players well but I was confident we could do it. I’ve done my part in a real difficult situation. The job was to keep Torquay in the league.
