Wharton - I will meet anyone

Wharton rejected a takeover bid, lead by former FA compliance officer Graham Bean, on Friday.

Bean heads a seven-strong group of businessmen who have revealed plans for a new club shop and Iron Bar, as well as a £500,000 investment in playing staff.

But Wharton has responded by promising to unveil his own plans for the club, as well as an increase in the budget for playing staff next season.

In a statement released on Thursday evening he said: "I have rejected the approach out of hand because the person leading the proposed consortium does not impress me, and the remainder of the consortium has not been named.

"It is generally accepted that the leader of the consortium is Graham Bean, but why he should go public whilst demanding I treat it as confidential, I really don't know.

"I have advised the solicitor acting for the consortium that, as chairman of the football club, I am always ready to meet people who feel they have something to offer or contribute to the club. This does not necessarily involve the sale of my shares.

"Brian Laws will be our manager next season. He is actively looking to strengthen the squad. After two years of cutbacks his budget is being increased which will allow an increase in quality and or size of the squad.

"After three weeks of turmoil and anxiety we can now look forward to rebuilding the confidence of Scunthorpe United. We are a small but proud club and have some very ambitious plans for the future, both on and off the pitch.

"At the moment we are a Board of only three directors, Rex Garton, Simon Elliott and myself. Jason Oxenforth is an Associate Director and is already proving to be a valuable addition to our team. We are all busy putting the finishing touches to our "Strategy Plan" which will be published on our Website within a few days.

"In the meantime please be assured the well being of Scunthorpe United is uppermost in my mind.

"For those who doubt my integrity, please judge me on my two earlier years as your Chairman and on what Brian achieves next season. I hope we can end this season with a second consecutive home win and can then look forward with optimism to next August."
