The Welsh club are £2.6million in debt and will find out on Friday afternoon if their application to go into administration is granted.

Wrexham will immediately be deducted 10 points if they are succesful, plunging them deep into the League One relegation zone.

It means they could arrive at Glanford Park for the FA Cup clash with Scunthorpe tomorrow night having made history by becoming the first League club to go into administration since the Football League introduced a 10-point penalty to prevent clubs using it as an easy escape route.

Smith said: "The fans have been brilliant these past few weeks, and administration is better than liquidation.

"This club must not be allowed to die because it means so much to the people of north Wales, it must survive.

"Even if we lose 10 points, I'm confident we'll stave off the threat of relegation because of the spirit within the squad and the close togetherness with the fans."
