Youth team captain trials at Aston Villa

The 19-year-old central defender will train with the Premiership club, and play for the side on Thursday in Malcom Starkey's testimonial at Shrewsbury Town.

At six foot five inches McCombe has attracted interest from several Premiership clubs, with Totenham Hotspur also keeping tabs on the player who has impressed after breaking into the side this season.

He is rated at around £750K by the club, who say they will not stand in his way if he wants to play at the highest level. Although we are not exactly rolling in money we are in no desperate need to sell - especially with a potential sell-on fee coming from Gillingham after Chris Hope handed in a transfer request.

"This is just a great opportunity for Jamie to show what he can do amongst players at the highest level," explained Iron gaffer Brian Laws to the club's official website today.

"Villa are one of the clubs that have been showing an interest in him and they asked if they could take him for a short trial.

"It was an opportunity Scunthorpe United club could not deny him and should prove a tremendous experience for him.”

Iron-Bru.net will have a reporter at the match, so check back here at the end of the week to see how he fared.
