The 31-year-old has been without a club since being released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season.
"He wasn't strong enough or fit enough for the levels we're at," Ward told the News & Star.
"I can't wait, because I'd have to wait a while."
The Cumbrians' defender Peter Murphy could be sidelined for more than a month after damaging medial ligaments in a training ground incident.
"We're having a scan to clarify the position. It's a problem, because we don't want people out," added Ward.
