Chesterfield hit back at critics

The Spireites were challenging at the top of the table at the start of the season, but failed to make the play-offs after fading away.

Chairman Barrie Hubbard insists that the club, who suffered financial problems in the late 90s that saw their former chairman jailed, are merely living within their means.

He said: "It has again been graphically illustrated only this month with Rotherham United docked ten points next season for entering into a Creditors Voluntary Agreement

"Meanwhile Chesterfield, which has debts of £1.6million, treads a fine balance between keeping the club finances in check and putting out a team that will compete with the best of them.

"The club does not lack ambition, but most people would surely agree that, frustrating though it is, it's not wise to live beyond one's means if that could put the club's future into serious jeopardy again."
