Colchester aim for immediate return

The Us were relegated after a combination of fellow strugglers Barnsley defeating Watford and the fact that Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City still have to play each other.

Geraint Williams's side have collected just 36 points from 42 games and have conceded 76 goals in the Championship this season.

"We are doing what we can to make sure we've got every chance for an immediate return," chief executive Marie Partner said.

"As disappointed as we all are, we now have to kick on with what we've been doing over the past six months, which is to step up our planning and preparation to ensure we get back up there as soon as possible.

"We may be down now, but there are a lot of positive things going on and we are all doing what we can behind the scenes to make sure that we've got every chance for an immediate return."
