The Terriers sacked Peter Jackson on Tuesday, and asked Gills chairman Peter Scally for permission to talk to Jepson.
Jepson spent three years playing for the Yorkshire side.
"Ronnie was always going to be linked because he's a bit of a legend after his time as a player there," said Scally.
