United's lead was extended thanks to Oldham's home loss to Bournemouth - which saw them drop dramatically from second to fifth.

Their promotion campaign appears to be imploding on the back of injuries and suspensions, with the defeat at the hands of the Cherries their third consecutive defeat.

David McGoldrick and Bjarni Vidarsson scored for the south coast club, with Andy Liddell scoring for the Latics.

Yeovil - who were promoted from League Two along with Scunthorpe in 2004/05 - moved into the second automatic promotion spot thanks to a 1-0 win over Swansea City. Experienced striker Marcus Stewart got the goal.

Nottingham Forest moved into third with Junior Agogo's brace sealing a 2-1 win at Chesterfield.

Bristol City are fourth, with Phil Jevons scoring both the goals in a 2-0 success at Brighton.

Carlisle are within reach of the play-offs thanks to a 1-0 win over Cheltenham.

Tranmere hold the final play-off spot despite crashing 3-1 at improving Leyton Orient.

Rotherham's plight at the foot of the table deepened with a 3-0 defeat at Northampton.

Crewe incredibly missed three penalty kicks against Huddersfield, for whom former Iron striker Paul Hayes made his debut after joining on loan from Barnsley on Friday, but were still 2-1 winners.

Doncaster beat Port Vale 1-0, while Millwall were also single-goal victors at Blackpool.
