Bothroyd played for Coventry when current Leeds boss Gary McAllister was the Sky Blues manager.
The striker spent a month on loan at Stoke City last term and has not featured in Wolves boss Mick McCarthy's first-team plans during pre-season.
McAllister has already signed Enoch Showumni this summer as he looks to add to his attacking options at Elland Road.
Leeds will being their League One campaign with a trip to Glanford Park to face Scunthorpe on August 9.
