The forward Lee Hughes opened his goal-scoring account for the season and did it with a hat-trick to help Oldham crush Cheltenham Town 4-0.

The former West Brom and Coventry forward was simply too hot for the shaky visiting defence, but Oldham's whole performance was impressive as they kept up their 100 per cent start to the campaign. Danny Whitaker also netted.

Leicester City survived Tranmere Rovers' late revival to preserve their unbeaten start to the season and climb to second.

Goals from Steven Howard and Matt Fryatt had given the Foxes a comfortable cushion, but then there were anxious moments late on after a Chris Shuker strike sparked a Rovers rally.

But City's nerves were soothed deep in time added on when Fryatt struck again to make the game safe.

Carlisle United lost their 100 per cent record as they were held to a draw at Brisbane Road by battling Leyton Orient.

The home side, beaten at Ipswich in the Carling Cup and at Peterborough last week in the league were good value despite suffering first-half injuries to Wayne Gray and Danny Granville.

Carlisle's point came at a cost after striker Scott Dobie was dismissed three minutes from time for lashing out the Os defender Brian Saah.

Manager Graham Turner warned newly-promoted Hereford United before the start that they would have to cut out defensive mistakes if they are to survive in League One.

Within five minutes against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Ground they were two down, 17 minutes on Rovers were three-up and it all became a rout.

The Pirates were superior throughout, and even a late consolation did nothing to lessen the pain in a 6-1 scoreline which left Hereford the only side in the division yet to earn a point.

Leeds United were held again, with a 1-1 draw at Yeovil Town. They hoped to bounce back from last week's home loss to Oldham with three points,a nd took the lead after just 30 seconds.

The Argentinian striker Luciano Becchio was brought into the squad by the manager Gary McAllister, and he beat the home captain Terry Skiverton for speed before firing a neat left-footed drive inside the left-hand post of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The home side levelled when they were awarded a penalty kick. The Leeds defender Paul Huntington pushed Paul Warne in the area and Lloyd Owusu, on as a substitute, fired the spot-kick low to Casper Ankergren's left. The keeper made a good stop, but couldn't cling on and Owusu followed up to knock in the rebound.

Stockport County grabbed their first win of the season, with a dramatic stoppage time goal from Tommy Rowe securing a 1-0 success at Hartlepool United.

Johnnie Jackson returned to haunt his old club by scoring one goal and making another as Colchester United survived a late Swindon Town rally to claim a 3-1 success at the County Ground.

Jackson spent three months on loan at the Robins when he was a Tottenham teenager five years ago.

Crewe Alexandra secured their first win of the new season as they edged out Walsall 2-1 in a tense encounter at Gresty Road.

Millwall are still seeking a first win of the new season but they will take heart after abattling goalless draw at Northampton Town.

The winger Mark Wright set up both first-half goals and hit the post as the MK Dons inflicted a first defeat on pre-season promotion favourites Huddersfield Town in a 3-1 success at the Galpharm Stadium

Wright, who scored 15 goals as the Dons won League Two last term, ripped the Terriers apart.
