Johnson quit the Glovers on Friday to take charge at Bristol City, after guiding the Huish Park club to two promotions in four years.

And he reckons his old No.2 is the right man to take the Somerset club forward.

He said: "Steve has played a major part in the success of the club, and deserves his chance.

"But if the Yeovil board overlook him I'd be only too happy to bring him to Bristol."

While Johnson was celebrating a 3-2 win for City over Brentford, Yeovil showed their is life after him by beating Port Vale 1-0.

Thompson oversaw the victory, and immediately threw his name into the hat for the job on a full-time basis.

He said: Of course I would be interested in taking the job. I knew it would be difficult as Gary is a hard act to follow.

"But I don't know what direction the board would want to take. There is a meeting on Monday and things might become clearer after that.

"It was wonderful support from the fans (on Saturday), and I thanked the players for giving us everything on the pitch."
