Walsall gunning for promotion

The Saddlers are in a period of transition after the former Scunthorpe boss Richard Money quit the club, saying he had taken them as far as he thought they could go.

Jimmy Mullen has since taken over in the hotseat at the Bescot Stadium, but has yet to replace players who left at the end of last season.

But Jeff Bonser, the club's chairman, has insisted returning to the second tier of English football is a realistic aim for his side.

"We want to build a team that is competitive and hopefully we can force our way into the Championship," he told the Express & Star.

"I see no reason why we shouldn't do that, because three years out of the last seven we've been in there, so we can do it again.

"We are talking to a lot of players at the moment and over the next few weeks they will start arriving at the club."
