Scunthorpe dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday despite not playing a game.
Yeovil Town's 2-1 home win over Preston was enough to haul them out of the bottom four at the expense of the Iron.
The Glovers rose up to 18th, taking advantage of the reduced fixture list due to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Rochdale also secured a 3-0 win over Lancashire rivals Bury to bolster their hopes of avoiding the drop, with the three points moving them off the bottom to 22nd.
Dale are now on 24 points, one behind Scunthorpe on 25. Walsall, who visit Glanford Park in a league fixture next Saturday, are above them - and out of the drop zone - on goal difference.
Exeter were beaten 1-0 at home by table-topping Charlton, to leave them hovering just above the danger zone on 27 points.
