Carruthers left Scunthorpe last season in search of a bigger pay packet at Macclesfield Town.

It sparked condemnation from Iron manager Brian Laws, as the striker had already verbally agreed a new contract to stay at Glanford Park.

But he had been told he has no future with the Silkmen, and his contract was terminated by mutual consent this weekend.

Lincoln City had already rejected his advances, but he has signed for Boston United who are in need of a new striker after Derek Lilley left the club seven weeks after joining them.

He has returned to Scottish Premier League side Livingston because his wife could not settle in Lincolnshire.

Carruthers is the fourth summer signing for the Pilgrims, following the captures of Andy Kirk, Austin McCann and Jason Lee.

He could even end up playing alongside England legend Paul Gascoigne, who Boston want to sign as player-coach.

*Former Scunthorpe midfielder Ian Kilford has signed for Conference North side Barrow, where United's Football In The Community officer Lee Turnbull is manager.
