Buckley hopes to keep Belles going

The Belles' operating costs of £65,000 a year are not much compared to those seen in men's football, but despite being a Premier League side the Yorkshire side have been unable to find a sponor.

They are even struggling to find the £500 needed to hire a coach to fulfil Sunday's league fixture against Arsenal.

Buckley, who is the side's manager, has loaned money to the club in an effort to keep them afloat. Buckley played at Glanford Park between 1991 and 1993.

"It would be a catastrophe to see the name Doncaster Belles go out of existence," he said.

"The club will be 40 years old in January, and with the best side we've had for some years we had hoped to be celebrating the anniversary in style."

The Belles chairman Jonathan James said there had been offers of help from the men's football club and Doncaster council, but money from them would not be available in time to secure the future of the side.

"We are absolutely desperate. We will have to shut the club down after Sunday's match with Arsenal unless we can somehow bring some cash into the club," he said.
