Parkin hit a hat-trick, and created a fourth goal, as the Cod Army registered a 4-0 win in their Lancashire derby at Morecambe.

The former Preston and Cardiff front man had failed to score since making the move to Highbury before this game but made amends with a fine individual display.

“We got the game right with the ball and without it. We controlled the tempo and I have to be delighted with the overall performance as well as the display from Jon Parkin," said Mellon.

“He hadn’t scored before today but he has played well this season and his goals today were a massive bonus for him and for us.

“He is a big player for us and I am delighted for him. He is far more than just a goalscorer and those goals will give him a massive lift."

Parkin spent the latter part of last season on loan at Glanford Park, netting six times in 14 League One appearances.
