The versatlile defender suffered the injury in Sheffield Wednesday's 4-1 defeat at Wolves last month.
"The initial timescale put on it was three to six months, but now they've gone to between six and eight months, which is a massive blow for the kid and for the club," explained the Wednesday manager Brian Laws.
"I feel for him because he's in the last year of his contract and he's given everything for the football club.
"He got injured and we need to take his welfare into consideration. I'm disappointed for him and I hope he has a speedy recovery."
Hinds moved to Hillsbrough at the start of last season when his contract at Scunthorpe ran out.
