Knill - who was capped once for Wales - spent four years at Gigg Lane before moving to Scunthorpe in 1993.

He will replace caretaker manager Chris Brass, who will revert to his role in charge of the club's youth development.

Knill's only previous managerial experience was at Rotherham United, where he spent 15 months in charge.

He was sacked as Millers manager in March 2007, and had been on the coaching staff at Chesterfield before securing a return to management with the Shakers.
