Mixed fortunes for Pato and Laws

Sttriker Paterson, a £1.3million summer purchase, scored for the Clarets at Hillsborough but it was of little effect as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat.

"Martin Paterson did well, as did Stephen Jordan and Wade Elliott, but you're not going to win in the Championship with only three players," said Coyle.

"It was schoolboy defending. I don't think Wednesday had to work particularly hard for any of their goals."

While Paterson and co are at the foot of the table after the opening day, Laws' side claimed the top spot.

"We made a poor start last season so we wanted to get a first win under our belts as quickly as possible," said Laws.

"It's early days but we're delighted, we couldn't have hoped for a better start."
