Matt O'Halloran was Boston United's hero as he grabbed a last gasp goal to secure a 2-1 fight-back victory over derby rivals Scunthorpe at York Road.

O'Halloran's 30-yard stoppage time pile driver helped the Pilgrims take their unbeaten record to six League Two games and dealt a jolt to their county neighbours' promotion hopes.

Boston started the brighter of the two sides with several waves of early attacks being repelled by the Scunthorpe rearguard.

Indeed very little in the way of clear openings fell to the home side apart from tame shots by Jason Lee and Courtney Pitt which keeper Paul Musselwhite gathered easily.

Boston came close to breaking the deadlock, though, on 20 minutes when Danny Thomas broke down the left and crossed for Lee but his header was hacked off the line but Ian Barraclough.

There was plenty of robust and aerial aspects to the overall play and in a tactical move Iron boss Brian Laws withdrew the diminutive Andy Keogh in favour of giant front man Steve Torpey.

Boston went close again in the 39th minute when Lee headed wide after Paul Ellender had knocked back a deep cross by Dean West.

Almost immediately Scunthorpe hit back with a fierce drive by Barraclough which flew inches too high. But on 42 minutes the visitors went ahead when Paul Hayes drilled in from six yards from a Cleveland Taylor cross.

Boston tried to lift the tempo after the break and they forced a couple of corners. But Scunthorpe continued to look dangerous on the break and in the 58th minute Barraclough shot on the turn but it was pushed aside by Nathan Abbey.

At the other end Pitt went close to levelling matters with a 64th minute free-kick, but fired his 25-yard effort over the bar.

Four minutes later, however, Pitt produced a better finish when lobbing over the advancing Musselwhite to equalise for Boston after a speedy break down the left, having initially been set free by Austin McCann.

After that goal the match tended to degenerate into an untidy battle for midfield supremacy with neither side seemingly able to conjure up another positive effort of note until drama of the highest order deep in stoppage time.

McCann played a ball across field to O'Halloran and his thunderous shot from 30 yards flew past Musslewhite to seal Boston's victory.
