Scunthorpe remain top of League Two and continued their unbeaten start to the season following a 0-0 draw with Darlington at the Williamson Motors Stadium.

The result was the most surprising element of the game given that both sides had played a total of 58 games since last registering a goalless draw.

The game was played in a fair manor throughout but was spoiled at times by referee Trevor Parkes, who blew his whistle at every opportunity.

Darlington had the first chance of the game in the 12th minute when strikers Matthew Clarke and Craig Russell linked up, but Russell put his near post shot wide.

Scunthorpe should have taken the lead in the 30th minute when Andy Keogh connected with a neat through ball but a last ditch tackle from Jonathan Hutchinson cleared the danger.

In the 37th minute Hayes was allowed a clear run on goal but he put his effort wide of the target from 25 yards.

Early in the second half Scunthorpe defender Lee Ridley's header went narrowly wide and then, in the 58th minute, Darlington went close with a Matthew Clarke header.

In the 65th minute Nathan Stanton raced forward and struck a low drive that was comfortably collected by Darlington keeper Sam Russell.

The visitors wasted a glorious opportunity soon afterwards when Keogh struck an 18-yard free-kick high over the cross bar and as Darlington ended the game strongly the visitors were kept busy defensively.

In the 78th minute substitute Joseph Kendrick surged down the left flank, But Russell mis-kicked in front of goal and in the 83rd minute Scunthorpe goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite did well to keep out a Kendrick volley.
