Late winner seals points

A fantastic strike from Lee Hodges in second half stoppage time saw United take all three points out of a dire game with Oxford United at Glanford Park this afternoon.

The match was preceded by a minutes silence for Princess Margaret, who passed away in her sleep at half six this morning after suffering a third stroke yesterday afternoon.

In all fairness, writing up a substantial report on the game would be right up there with curing thrid world debt or finding Osama Bin Laden so suffice to say the first half was dull, and the second half wasn't much better.

Surprisingly Laws chose to bring Russ Wilcox into the patched up defence, adding some vital experience to the side and taking much of the pressure off Mark Jackson who would have been the senior defender at 24.

Craig Dudley partnered Brian Quailey for his home debut, though the only effort he was able to register was a long range strike that went wide - althoguh he had done well to get the shot in under pressure.

The second half was better, though spending the second half stuck in the toilets would have been more entertaining than the first half.

Sparrow, Beags and Hodges all brought creditable stops out of Andy Woodman in the visiting goal, whislt Calvo-Garcia had to be on hand to clear the ball off the line after a scramble in the area.

A final push saw United take the lead and all three points, after Brian Laws decided to switch Peter Beagrie and Lee Hodges.

In the first of three minutes of stoppage time, the ball was cleared to Hodges on the edge of the area where he promptly cut inside before firing home an unstoppable shot as we have seen him do so many times from the left wing.

With a number of other third division results going our way, United move upto sixth in the table, five points behind Hull City but with a game in hand.

Shewsbury Town move down to seventh, whislt Rushden And Diomands slip out of the playoff spots after their 2-1 defeat at Boothferry Park.
