Scunthorpe 1 Macclesfield 0

The game had a nervous opening with neither side prepared to take risks.

Macclesfield were first to show and it needed a superb one handed save, in the 18th minute, at his right hand post by Tommy Evans to prevent former Iron favourite Paul Harsley from scoring from a low drive.

Three minutes later Scunthorpe's leading scorer Steve MacLean saw Steve Wilson save his point blank shot.

Scunthorpe were then denied again. Kevin Sharp's cross was met by Andy Butlers head and Wilson tipped the ball onto the bar and over. The keeper was then in action again to halt MacLean's hopes of adding to his 25 goal tally so far this season.

The home side appeared to be grabbing the ascendancy, but Macclesfield hit back with a dipping free kick from Steve Payne going just over the top and then Evans was Scunthorpe's hero once more with a full stretch save from Payne's header.

Scunthorpe broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, Peter Beagrie delivered a fine volley from the left to the far post where Steve Torpey rose to power home a fierce header.

The closing stages saw Macclesfield fought back and the ever alert Matt Tipton hit the woodwork and Tommy Widdrington saw a shot hit Evans on the chest and ricochet to safety
