Where do we go from here?

But, for every Iron fan, staring disbelievingly at a league table that is surely upside down (isn’t it?), it is a pertinent question.

I agree with comments made elsewhere on this site that football fans are, generally, a reactionary lot, BUT FOR PITY’S SAKE, WE’VE BEEN GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. SORT IT OUT NOW. Since Mark Lillis made his merry way to Halifax, we have never bothered the high flyers come May time. Oh, yes, there have been good moments (away at Luton last year, and the glorious double over Dull, for instance) but our new sub-level of terrible was reached last week, losing to Lincoln just isn’t good enough. Ever. At all. Never. Full Stop.

It’s not that our players are poor, that would almost make it bearable. Tommy Evans is a quality keeper. Dawson, Jackson and Stanton would walk into most Third Division defences, plus plenty of those in the Second. Cotterill and McCombe are two of the most exciting prospects that we’ve seen since Neil Cox. Garcia is a battling star, Graves and Sparrow are getting better all the time, Brough is starting to grow into that Lee Hodges shaped gap in the squad (a tough act to follow) and whatever your criticisms of our soon-to-be-manag…um…senior winger, Mr. Beagrie is a class act who I would rather have playing for us than against. Even the not-so-dynamic duo of Carruthers and Torpey came to us with glowing reputations. So why are we so poor? Draw your own conclusions, it ain’t difficult.

And it’s no use bleating that we’re too good to go down, that’s crap (just ask Nottingham Forest or Halifax etc.), but our reaction to this debacle could be too late to keep us up. Action needs to be taken NOW, it’s no use letting it go, we are being left behind and we can’t wait until we pass the point of no return. An upturn now, however the board feel this could be achieved (I am suggesting nothing explicitly, I value my freedom to get in to Glanford Park too much) could see us salvage mid-table dignity, perhaps clinching a play off spot. If we leave it till Christmas when we traditionally dip in form (if that is possible) then it’s goodbye Nationwide League, hello Scarborough et al, and potentially, what with football’s current financial situation, ‘Goodbye Scunthorpe United Football Club. R.I.P.’

This is not a joking matter, it’s a realistic possibility. A message to the Board: For the sake of our club, ACT NOW
