Izzy good enough?

With the former Swansea defender in the side, United have conceeded almost three times as many goals than when he has not been there.

Was it just me, or did he limp onto the pitch on Saturday? He is not fit at the moment, and is a liability as a result.

After keeping two clean sheets without him in the side, why put him in? Because he is the captain? Cliff Byrne at centre back would be the obvious choice, with Andy Wright filling in at right back. Nigel Adkins, the Scunthorpe maanger, should give Wright the chance to impress and do not send him packing in January.

We do have the option of Kenny Milne, when fit, but we cannot afford to wait that long if we have any realistic aims of Championship football next term.

We would love to have Milne, Pearce and Mirfin to choose from as our first choice centre backs. Pearce, when paired with Mirfin have been solid and even Pearce and Byrne looked a partnership in the making.

Adkins cannot afford to depend on the strikers and hope they outscore the opposition in any match. Four goals should be enough to win any game of football.

Yes, both teams made mistakes and you could, if you were looking for an excuse, put them down to the wintry conditions. But why didn't every other side in the country make mistakes in the bad weather?

It was entertaining, there were oohs and aahs from the crowd and maybe it was value for money. For a neutral, not for an Iron fan. The game should have been over at 2-0, let alone 4-1.

"I could have brought Andy Wright or Michael Lea on, but I didn't", was Adkins' explanation after the match. This does not answer why he did not make any subs. Iriekpen argubally shouldn't have started, Sparrow was struggling after the yellow card and Wooly ran himself into the ground.

Adkins will make changes away from home, but not at Glanford Park. Is that because he might get it wrong and people would boo? Who knows.

The positives that could be taken were the performances of Ben May, Gary Hooper and Byrne. May is starting to prove that he may be quite useful, and I think that has pleased most United fans.

We know we are good going forward, as good as anyone in this division. But with Iriekpen in the side we conceed as many as Crewe and they are the worst team we have played this year.

Adkins talked about "standing up and being counted" in his post match comments to journalists, maybe he will have to stand up to his fears of dropping Iriekpen and then we might look something like a team again.
