The assault on League One continues

Yes, it's only September and it's far too early to start counting our chickens, but this new look, young, hungry, United team may well be one that can mount a serious attempt to push on for promotion.

Unearthing the hidden talents of Gary Hooper, who was only proven at League Two level with Hereford may well turn out to be the coup of the summer. The former Southend man, who never pulled up any trees at Roots hall has already hit six goals in five games.

There is no doubt in my mind that Martyn Woolford can turn out to be a better winger than Kevan Hurst. He's already showed United fans what he can do and many are impressed with the attacking flair he possesses. He could be the greatest winger since Beagrie and looks to have the beating of the majority in this poor league.

The team has the ability to play any team in the division off the park and judging by recent wins at Stockport and Brighton, we are beginning to learn that attack is the best form of defence.

Conceeding late goals has been one of United's major flaws over the past few years but recently we've finished teams off before they have had a chance to get a hold of the game. Long may it continue.

Toggers looks outstanding in central midfield. Plenty of energy, a tough tackler and a winner. So much better than that other guy Goodwin. After a summer worrying we hadn't strengthened the team enough to launch a real assault on League One, we seem to have the strength in depth we've never had before.

This team looks as good, if not better than the record breaking side of 2006/07, who won the league at a canter.

Adkins is still aiming for the play offs, but deep down he must know the team have the potential to do just that again. It's a must that he keeps the players' feet firmly on the ground, but the new found confidence and attacking flair is greatly accepted.

If United continue to attack the league as they are doing at the moment, we'll be there or there abouts come May.

Let's just hope the cold winter doesn't cool the red hot Iron.
